Lesson: Righteousness and Wisdom

Lesson: Righteousness and Wisdom
Print Passage: Proverbs 3:1-12

Today we are in the book of Proverbs. It is part of a genre of Hebrew writings called Wisdom Literature. It is considered a book of moral instruction intending to help you live life to its fullest. Are you living a full life?
The writer begins with the instructions of keeping the commandments. Keeping them will prolong your life. Next bind mercy and truth around your neck. It says when you bind these two you will find favor with God AND man. Next is perhaps one of the most quoted scriptures of all time. Trust in the Lord with all your heart; and lean not unto your own understanding. Here we learn that with EVERY step we take we must ask God, am I going in the right direction? When we acknowledge Him, He will direct you toward the fullness as discussed earlier. Next it states, be wise, depart from evil. A fulfilled life is largely dependent on choices you make. The writer tells us be wise and departing from evil yields health to your body and nourishment to your bones. Next, it goes on to state, honor the Lord with thy substance, with the first fruits of your increase. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but in life, we have to give to receive. We have to humble ourselves so God can give the increase. I know it can be hard to grasp, but this stuff works. It is when you give it away that you become blessed. If you sow sparingly, you will reap sparingly. That is why the farmer over seeds. He does not just plant one seed and hope for the best.
The writer goes on to state, when we honor Him with our first fruits, our barns will be filled with plenty. He states your presses (barns) will burst out!!! How many of you all have Barnes bursting out!!!! Lastly it goes on to state despise not the chastening of the Lord. Many of us in life despise correction. However, whom the Lord loves, He corrects. When father takes scissors from the baby, soon the baby will grow in wisdom and realize that at that stage in his life he was not ready. So when your heavenly father removes things that you want badly in your life, remember Proverbs 3.

I love the example taking scissors from a baby. God loves us and will direct his will to protect us and grow us. That's why you have to know that all things work out for your good.
